The Bank of Cyprus Cultural Foundation presents the exhibition entitled «Guernica: The Story of a Painting». The exhibition is co-organized by the Bank of Cyprus Cultural Foundation and the ARTos Foundation, with the kind support of the Embassy of Spain in Cyprus. The exhibition is organized in the context of the Spanish Presidency of the European Union.
The destructive attack on the Basque city of Guernica on April 26th, 1937 was widely covered by the Spanish and International press. The news regarding the attack made it clear that it was carried out in disregard of the presence of civilians. The strong anti-war message of the painting continues to reverberate today all around the world, and especially in Cyprus, one more Guernica full of its own blemishes.
When working on the painting, Picasso said: «Regarding the mural I am working on currently and which I will name Guernica, as well as all my other recent paintings, I express through them my contempt for the clan of people who have sank Spain in an ocean of pain and death. »
The exhibition includes a reproduction of the painting itself (3.40 m x 1.60 m) and a choice of details from the painting, accompanied by text (in English), while the catalogue of the exhibition includes photographs and texts in Greek and Spanish. For the duration of the exhibition, and in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and Culture, there will be an educational program carried out for school children entitled "Create your own Guernica". The educational program includes the publication of a workbook with images and various other activities, which will be given to the children during their visit to the exhibition.
