Education, Innovation and Youth

Over the past two years we have been focusing on education and on the youth. We have partnered up with governmental and non-governmental organisations in a bid to help boost non-formal education, innovation and ingenuity.

Reaction - Youth for the Prevention

Reaction-Youth for the Prevention is a non-governmental organisation comprising young volunteers who are proactive in education, research and community support. In partnership with the NGO, we have provide support and volunteers in long list of actions, including  blood donations, collecting toys for the children of poor families, support in forest fires and other disasters and delivering toys to these families at Christmas time.

In February 2016, in a show of recognition of our endutring support, Reaction honoured the Bank in a ceremony ceremony held at the Presidential Palace in Nicosia. In October 2016, Reaction proclaimed the Bank’s CEO, John Patrick Hourican, as an honourable member of the NGO.

In December 2016, REACTION in cooperation with Bank of Cyprus, organized at the Bank’s Headquarters in Nicosia, a debate on “Cyprus Economy”. Students from public and private schools had the rare opportunity to set questions on the very crucial subject of economy towards the Minister of Finance and the Bank’s CEO. The debate was a great success with the two men promising to repeat it in the near future.

Prior to this, another interesting debate was organized in the same framework on the subject of “Road Safety” with students setting questions to the related Ministers, the Minister of Justice and the Minister of Transport, Communications and Works.

ABR-Alternative Brains Rule

In 2016 we developed a partnership called “Partners in Innovation” with ABR, in an effort to further promote innovation in the arts.

Over the past two years - 2015 and 2016 - ABR implemented three major programmes: the ABR In Lab, a programme aiming to promote innovation on local art themes and art forms; the ABR Pavilion Competition, organised by architecture students; and the ABR Festival, an event aimed to unify music, the arts and technology.

European Youth Parliament (EYP) Cyprus

The European Youth Parliament is one of the largest European platforms for debate, intercultural gatherings, European Civics, and the encouragement of dialogue among young people in Europe.

Bank of Cyprus maintains a partnership with EYP, covering its international Youth Summits and other actions.

University of Cyprus

In March 2016 the Bank signed a Memorandum of Cooperation with the University of Cyprus, the main objective of which was to develop innovation in Cyprus, to promote and upgrade the Bank’s products and services, and to foster educational research among students and in the fields of finance, economics, business management and culture.

Cyprus Mathematical Society

The Cyprus Mathematical Society (CMS) is recognized as one of the core partners of the Bank's corporate responsibility actions. Its activities include organizing mathematics competitions, conferences on mathematics science and mathematical education, and the summer school in Mathematics.

For the 2016-2017 academic year, we have enhanced our collaboration with the CMS through the International Mathematical Olympiad, the European Girls’ Mathematical Olympiad, the Mathematical Relay, and a partership to provide math tutoring to pupils in economic distress.
